One of the problems we frequently encounter is blinking or squinting . Families come to us with complaints such as, “My 3-year-old son constantly blinks, my daughter blinks, what causes constant blinking?” There can be various reasons for blinking in children. Accurate diagnosis requires a comprehensive eye examination and a detailed anamnesis (how the problem started).
Reasons for Blinking
- Tic behavior
- Temporary tic behavior
- Chronic tic behavior
- Tourette syndrome
- Functional blinking
- Blinking due to eye irritation
- Due to outward deviation, one eye squints.
- Squinting to try and see clearly.

Blinking in children is caused by an eye-related reason in 30% of cases. We detect temporary tic behavior in 70-85% of these cases . To diagnose and treat eye-related causes , we always perform a comprehensive eye examination.
When a child blinks , we first examine the surface of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. This examination can reveal any irritation, particularly allergic reactions.

Tic Behavior
Tics are repetitive, involuntary, and purposeless movements or sounds. A person can consciously stop these movements, but cannot prevent them from recurring. Tics can be stopped or reduced by another conscious action.
However, sometimes psychological tics can increase with another voluntary movement. For example, when a child who involuntarily blinks is asked to look at or focus on an object, the psychologically-based tics may increase.

Tic behavior is a common problem between the ages of 3 and 8 and is usually temporary . Chronic tics, however, are most prevalent between the ages of 10 and 12. In many children, tic behavior decreases during adolescence and early adulthood.
Chronic tic behavior refers to conditions that last longer than one year and include periods of uninterrupted tic activity lasting more than three months. Chronic tic behavior may be accompaniedby attention deficit disorder, social phobia, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive behaviors .
We don’t usually require further investigation for temporary and mild tic behaviors . However, neurological and psychiatric evaluations may be necessary for tics showing signs of chronicity. Conversely, it is possible to reduce or eliminate tic behavior using the reverse habit-forming method.
