The most common cosmetic issues affecting the eyes and the surrounding area involve excess skin and fat on the eyelids, problems that typically arise with age. Eyelid aesthetic surgery is not a simple procedure; through this surgery, we permanently correct these issues.

Eyelid surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The duration of the surgery ranges from approximately 20 to 40 minutes. Recovery takes about two weeks, after which the eyelids return to their normal state.

We perform eyelid surgeries in an operating room setting—specifically, at our center where patients’ cardiac and respiratory functions are monitored. An anesthesiologist is present throughout the surgery.

Eye Aesthetic Surgeries We Perform

  • Eyelid lift
  • Removal of under-eye bags
  • Removal of excess skin from the upper eyelid
  • Correction of eyelid sagging
  • Removal of a mass from the eyelid
  • Correction of excessive eyelid opening

In cosmetic eye surgery, we carefully evaluate the position of the eyebrows, skin thickness, the amount of fat in the eyelids, and the strength of the eyelid-lifting muscles. We plan the surgery definitively only after this assessment.

To achieve the best results in cosmetic eye surgery, simply removing skin is sufficient for some patients; however, factors such as thick skin or prominence and fullness in the fat pads sometimes require us to alter the surgical approach.

For individuals with excessive puffiness or excess skin on their eyelids, we can address both issues simultaneously.

What to Consider for Individuals Undergoing Eyelid Surgery

  • Hypertension
  • Bleeding and clotting problems, use of aspirin and other blood thinners
  • Monitoring is required regarding diabetes, allergies, and wound healing.
  • Patients presenting with periodic swelling and edema of the eyelids should be evaluated for certain diseases;
    • Thyroid disease
    • Blood diseases
    • Heart disease

How Can Eyelids Achieve a More Youthful Aesthetic Appearance?

Eyelid wrinkles, fat deposits causing under-eye bags, and sagging muscle tissues are surgically removed. Additionally, if the eyelids are turning inward or outward, a procedure may be performed to tighten the tendons.

Blepharoplasty can also be performed during the removal of fatty deposits known as xanthelasma or other masses on the eyelids.

Eyelid Surgery

The surgery to remove excess fat or skin from the eyelids is called blepharoplasty. We perform blepharoplasty procedures under local anesthesia.

Ptosis People with drooping eyelids try to see their surroundings by raising their eyebrows. This, in turn, leads to wrinkles forming on their foreheads. Raising the eyebrows becomes a permanent facial expression and can cause headaches. After excess skin is removed from the eyelids, some of our patients also require strengthening of the levator muscle. Ptosis surgery is crucial for ensuring adequate eyelid elevation.

In a portion of our patients, eyelid drooping is accompanied by a drooping eyebrow. In such cases, it may be necessary to perform both the eyebrow lift and the eyelid surgery during the same session.

Drooping eyelids can lead people to be perceived by those around them as constantly tired or ill. Some of our patients, on the other hand, complain that they always look like they’ve had a night out. Bags under the eyes sometimes appear at an early age; in such cases, the eyelids are swollen and taut. In these patients, we achieve excellent aesthetic results simply by removing the fat.

Eyelid Surgery Cost

Eyelid surgery surgeries can help eliminate the tired appearance of the eyes. The success of eyelid surgery requires that the patient be informed accurately and realistically. By determining the appropriate surgical technique, the goal is to help patients achieveachieve a natural appearance in a healthy manner.

After Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery

Eyelid cosmetic surgery usually yield satisfying results. The success of the surgery depends on the patient being informed accurately and realistically. As surgeons, our mission is to determine the appropriate cosmetic eye surgery technique and to help our patients achieve a natural appearance in a healthy manner.

What Should I Do After Eyelid Surgery, and How Long Is the Recovery Period?

  • Applying ice after surgery will help reduce swelling and bruising. I recommend that my patients apply ice for 20 minutes every hour they are awake for 3 days.
  • For 3 days after surgery, you should sleep with your head elevated at a 45- to 60-degree angle.
  • Some swelling and bruising of the eyelids are to be expected. Full recovery takes about 15 days.
  • You can take a shower 3 days after surgery.
  • Swimming is not recommended for 2–3 weeks after surgery.
  • If you wear contact lenses, it is recommended that you take a two-week break.

What Kind of Problems Can Occur After Eyelid Surgery?

  • Removing too much excess skin from the eyelids during surgery can result in an unnatural appearance.
  • Severe injury to the muscles in the eyelid anatomy can lead to problems such as an inability to close the eyelid.
  • Removing excessive amounts of skin or fat can cause tightness and even ‘“ectropion” in the eyelid.
  • However, removing too much of the fat pads that cause puffiness can lead to sagging of the eyelids.
  • To avoid these problems, you should avoid making excessive corrections.
  • It would be advisable to plan an approach aimed at achieving a result that looks reasonable and natural.

What Causes Eyelid Wrinkles?

The main cause of wrinkles on the eyelids is premature aging or the premature aging of the eyelids. As a result of aging, certain anatomical changes occur.

These changes are referred to as ‘periorbital laxity syndrome’ . The outward herniation of the fat pads surrounding the eye socket and the eyeball causes under-eye bags. It occurs when the connective tissue that holds the tissues around the eye together loses its strength and succumbs to gravity.

When Is It Medically Necessary to Remove Excess Skin from the Eyelid?

If excess skin on the eyelid increases over time and causes the eyelid to droop, treatment becomes necessary if the drooping obstructs vision or causes a narrowing of the visual field.

For example, it is obvious that a person with excessive skin sagging on the sides of the upper eyelids will have difficulty seeing the rearview mirrors while driving. For such a person, the removal of this excess skin is a medical necessity. (And surgeries performed in this situation are covered by the Social Security Institution.)

In what situations would you recommend cosmetic removal of under-eye bags or excess skin on the eyelids?

We may recommend these surgeries if issues with the eyelids significantly affect a person’s life from a psychosocial perspective. For example, if some people have very prominent under-eye bags that give them a look as if they’ve “partied all night”… It is possible to get rid of these bags through eyelid cosmetic surgery.

If this condition causes problems in a person’s professional or social life, these procedures become a necessity rather than merely a cosmetic surgery. If removing the bags under the eyes would cause the eyelids to sag or become loose, some skin must also be removed.

How Is Eye Bag Surgery Performed?

How Do Eyelid Bags or Excess Skin on the Upper Eyelid Develop?

As we age, the collagen tissue surrounding the fat pads and the muscles around the eyes weakens. The fat pads in the upper and lower eyelids become more prominent and, as they succumb to gravity, wrinkles begin to form on the skin.

What are eyelid bags, eyelid wrinkles, and excess skin called?

Wrinkles on the eyelids; “dermatochalasis” is the term used. The fullness of the eyelids and the prominence of the fat pads are referred to as “blepharochalasis” .

If Only Under-Eye Bags Are Present, Can Under-Eye Bag Surgery Be Performed on Its Own?

Bagginess and fullness in the lower eyelids typically begin around the age of 40. They create an appearance of sleep deprivation, fatigue, or excessive alcohol consumption.

These implants can be inserted through an incision on the inner part of the lower eyelid. The advantage of this procedureis is that there are no visible incisions or stitches.

Is it possible to remove excess eyelid skin, eyelid wrinkles, and protruding fat tissue?

  • Dermatoshalasis or blepharochalasis —the name we give to this aesthetic problem of the eyelids—is addressed by “blepharoplasty.”

Unilateral Eyelid Droop

Although drooping eyelids are an aesthetic concern, they can sometimes signal an underlying medical condition; in particular, they may stem from a pathology affecting the brain or nerves.

Patients constantly tilt their heads back and raise their eyebrows to lift the drooping eyelid. Unilateral eyelid drooping is a medical condition that can be treated.

Trauma to the nerve that lifts the eyelid causes eyelid drooping. Diabetes and hypertension are chronic diseases that damage the nerves.

Brain tumors and head trauma are other causes. Sometimes, the condition may be congenital. Eyelid drooping that develops later in life is usually related to the muscle that lifts the eyelid; as a result of the aging process, this muscle slackens and loses its elasticity.

Symptoms of Unilateral Eyelid Drooping

Ptosis Symptoms may be unilateral or may affect both eyelids. It is clearly noticeable when viewed from the outside.

Eyelid drooping may sometimes be accompanied by asymmetry between the eyes. A decrease in vision may occur. Pupil sizes may be unequal. These signs will be revealed through a detailed examination.

How is unilateral eyelid drooping treated?

A detailed examination is essential in cases of eyelid drooping. It is crucial to determine whether there is any underlying neurological finding, and the necessary tests and analyses must be performed for this purpose. Treatment for unilateral eyelid drooping is generally surgical; the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid is repaired, or—in cases of severe muscle trauma—it is suspended from a muscle in the head region.

It is preferable for the patient to be awake during the surgery to allow for the adjustment of the eyelid level. However, general anesthesia is preferred for children and infants to ensure a more successful and safe procedure. In children, eyelid drooping presents both aesthetic and functional issues. Severe eyelid drooping that obstructs the eye affects visual function.

Over time, it causes amblyopia, leading to a decline in visual acuity. In adolescents, it can lead to psychological problems and social issues and other social problems. Ptosis can be treated surgically or with the latest laser system.

Eyelid Surgery Before and After

Before and After Eyelid Surgery We would like to point out that the changes and effects can vary significantly. Sagging around the eyes and on the eyelids can increase particularly with advancing age and as a result of certain medical conditions.

In addition, signs of aging around the eyes are aesthetic concerns that often pose significant problems, particularly for women. Drooping eyelids, whether caused by genetics or trauma, can create the same aesthetic concerns and may also lead to vision problems.
